Day Skipper

A comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the skills required to become a competent skipper of a small boat. This course is the first step to building up the background knowledge required to take charge of a small boat in familiar waters. No previous knowledge is assumed or required.
The aim of this course is to give you a broad based introduction to the many topics that people who go to sea should be familiar with.

What the course involves.

The course is run over a duration of 28 weeks covering the following topics:-

Nautical terms
Types of vessels
Rope work and knots
Mooring a boat
Anchoring
Safety equipment
Personal safety
Fire safety and firefighting
Emergency procedures

Sessions include lectures, practical work in groups and individual practice.
The course also includes some homework.

Towards the end of the course two test papers are set, one covers all aspects of safety and seamanship, while the other concentrates on practical navigation using nautical charts.
